There are a number of different forms of heating fuel derived from wood. Each has its own particular advantages and drawbacks, and some are more suitable for certain applications and appliances than others.
Here are some of the most commonly used types, with suggested applications:
Logs

Good for domestic use. Local, sustainable, suitable
for open fireplaces,
log burners (room heaters) or log batch boilers.
Chips

Better suited to commercial scale applications and usually in boilers of
over 50kW capacity.
Pellets

For use in domestic pellet boilers and room heaters.
Very high calorific content, easy to store – can be fully automated.
Briquettes

Dry, easy to store, high calorific content, suitable for room stoves and log boilers.
